CHENNAI: Three persons have filed a petition in the court of the Principal Sessions Judge, Chennai, seeking bail in the case pertaining to the murder of Vijayakumar (53) at Kotturpuram on Wednesday night.

Vijayakumar, whose wife Sudha is the daughter of Narayanan, brother of former Chief Minister Janaki Ramachandran, was going in a car along with another person, Senthil, when a car hit his vehicle from behind twice.

Vijayakumar got down from his vehicle and questioned the driver of the other car when an unidentified person hit him with a wooden rod on his head. The assailants escaped. Vijayakumar was rushed to a private hospital at Teynampet where he was declared “brought dead.”

In the petition, filed by counsel S. Karthikeyan, the petitioners Rajendran, Latha Rajendran and Kumar Rajendran of Alwarpet said they were arrested for offences under section 120 (B) (Punishment for criminal conspiracy) and 302 (punishment for murder) IPC on June 4.

The prosecution case was that on June 4 Vijayakumar alias MGR Vijayan was assaulted by unknown persons and he later succumbed to injuries. The police arrested the petitioners on June 4 on suspicion and they are in police custody. They have not been produced in court.

The allegations are false and motivated. They are innocent and not connected with any offence as alleged, the petitioners said, and sought release on bail.
