The Special Investigation Team (SIT) police on Tuesday arrested here three more persons on charges of planting a pipe-bomb underneath a causeway near Alampatti, a suburban location in Madurai district, ahead of the BJP leader L.K. Advani’s tour in October 2011.
The names of the arrested persons were given as Dharves Moideen (45) of Nelpettai, Syed (33) of Villapuram and Mustafa (37) of Kuppu Pillai Thope. They were produced in a court here in the evening. Already the police had arrested Ismath and Abdullah in this connection.
According to police officers investigating the case, just a few hours prior to the departure of Mr. Advani from Madurai, who had planned to tour on a rath yatra up to Shencottah, a long PVC pipe, filled with gel and other explosive substances, was unravelled after some people alerted the police on bandobust duty.
Immediately senior officers rushed to the spot and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad police defused the explosives.
After the case was transferred to SIT, the teams secured two persons. Based on their confessions and among other inputs gathered, the police were on the look out for ‘Police’ Fakrudeen, who is suspected to be the mastermind behind the crime.
The arrest of Dharves Moideen, brother of “Police” Fakrudeen, has come as a relief to the police who hoped to zero in on the key suspect soon.
