Three masons riding a two-wheeler were killed when a private bus carrying Ayyappa devotees hit their vehicle at Kilakarai on Wednesday.

Police said the three were on their way to their work spot near Kilakarai from their village Periailai near Sikkal when the bus, proceeding to Kanyakumari from Rameswaram, dashed against their vehicle near a polytechnic. The victims were identified as C. Ramaiah (30), K. Mohandoss (30) and T. Chellamani (28).

While Ramaiah and Mohandoss died on the spot, Chellamani succumbed to the injuries at the Government Headquarters Hospital here soon after admission. The police said all the three were married men with children.

The bus carrying the Ayyappa devotees was crossing a private transport bus, which stopped in front of the polytechnic, when it hit the two-wheeler, the police said.

The bus driver, Bharathi (35), fled the scene and surrendered at the Erwadi police station. Later, he was remanded in judicial custody, the police added. The Ayyappa devotees, fearing angry reaction from the residents of the area, got into other buses and left the spot. The police have seized the bus and registered a case.
