Water tanks yet to become a reality here

SALEM: The delay in the construction of overhead water tanks and laying of pipelines under the Added Area Water Supply Scheme has left thousands of residents to continue to face problems in getting adequate water supply.

The Salem Corporation had planned to construct 21 tanks under Packages I, II, III and IV of the scheme and initiated steps in 1998. But only two tanks were constructed (under Package - I) and put into use so far.

A year ago, the civic administration initiated the construction of 13 tanks under Packages II and IV of the scheme through the implementing agency, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage board. Of them, two are still under construction. Officials have completed the construction of 11 tanks. But they are yet to lay pipelines fully for distributing water from these tanks. The construction of five tanks planned under Package III is yet to begin. Pipelines will be laid quickly and steps have been taken up to complete the works under Packages II and IV, officials said.
