The Villupuram police led by Inspector Tamilmaran seized 204 cans of rectified spirit from a lorry found abandoned at T. Mettupalayam on the Ginjee-Villupuram road near here on Sunday.

The police sources said that each can carried 35 litres of rectified spirit and the value of the total seizure was put at Rs. 10 lakh. The sources further said that when the police team was carrying out vehicle check it came across the lorry lying stranded at T. Mettupalayam.

Close inspection revealed that the steering rod of the vehicle was damaged and the contraband cargo covered with a tarpaulin. There was no driver or cleaner in the vehicle.

Later, the police moved the vehicle to the Villupuram taluk police station. A case has been booked. Superintendent of Police N. Bhaskaran and Superintendent of Police (Excise) Vijayalakshmi inspected the vehicle.
