Two passengers who took video footage of the newly inducted Air India’s Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ at the Chennai Airport and voluntarily deplaned citing health reasons were detained by intelligence agencies for interrogation on Wednesday.
According to police sources, Ameer Thwaha (34) and Mansoor (19) of Ernakulam in Kerala had tickets to New Delhi and boarded the Dreamliner IC-430 flight scheduled to take off at 10.45 a.m. However, minutes after boarding the flight and occupying business class seats, they complained of some illness and requested flight attendants to deplane them. After informing the Captain, the cabin crew assisted the passengers to disembark.
Suspecting foul play, security agencies intercepted the duo for interrogation. An analysis of their mobile phones revealed video of the inside view of the Dreamliner. “They had taken video of the business class cabin, seat layout and exits. When questioned about the reason for taking the video, their explanation was not satisfactory. The health condition of both the passengers is normal,” a senior police official said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Thwaha owned a travel agency in Alapuzha and Mansoor was a student. They came to the Chennai Airport on Tuesday morning and had confirmed tickets to Kochi in Air India flight AI-510 which took off at 10.50 a.m. “After obtaining boarding passes, they did not go for security check. They claimed to have cancelled the trip in the last minute owing to some exigency…there are many contradictions in their statements which we are verifying,” the official said.
A team comprising Central and State intelligence officials started interrogating the two passengers on Wednesday evening. “We will be registering a case under the provisions of section 41 of Cr.PC against the suspects. Investigators are coordinating with the Kerala police to check their antecedents. As of now the two are maintaining that they came all the way to see the ‘Dreamliner’ and show the video to their friends,” the official added.
