: Two lakh seedlings will be planted in the district under massive planting programme of the State Government to mark the birthday of Chief Minister Jayalalitha, according to Nihar Ranjan, District Forest Officer.
He said here on Friday that the seedlings would be handed over to the administrators of educational institutions, industries and religious sites. “Importance is being accorded to protect flora and fauna and promote tree cultivation for a better environment.”
As there is monsoon shower, seedlings are being planted to enhance the forest cover.
Apart from the this, forest officials had been involved in planting 1,10,000 seedlings of different varieties under tree cultivation on private lands programme.
Seedlings of teak, neem, mahagoni and other timber tree species are being planted on 550 acres in the forest ranges in Tuticorin, Tiruchendur, Srivaikuntam, Kovilpatti, Vilathikulam and also on shelter belt range. Besides, 1,80,000 casuarina seedlings are being planted on 180 acres.
