As many as 199 ailing cooperative societies were revived by the ruling DMK government in the interest of the farming community, State Food Minister E.V. Velu said here on Saturday.
While speaking at the 57th All India Cooperative Week function at Krishnagiri, Mr. Velu said that he had received a recommendation from the officials to close down the 199 ailing Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies. But he being a farmer, revived the societies with the consent of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The necessary funds for revival of the societies were pumped by the government, he said. The DMK government which waived the crop loans of Rs. 7,000 crore availed by the farmers, has increased the quantum of crop loan to Rs. 6,485 crores, which is 150 per cent higher than the previous AIADMK regime.
The jewel loan disbursal from the cooperative sectors to the farmers at the subsidized rate of interest was also increased to Rs. 57,237 crore from Rs. 25,187crore. He also announced that he will review the functioning of the Food and Consumer Protection Departments next week.
