Arrested for picketing municipal office

About 150 activists of the Naam Thamizhar Katchi were arrested when they tried to picket the municipal office in Gudalur on Wednesday.

District Secretary of the party B. Anand, who led the demonstration, told The Hindu that it was to draw the attention of the government to the shortcomings in the municipality and highlight various irregularities.

Pointing out that no action was being taken to check the proliferation of unauthorised constructions, he said that though basic amenities were woefully inadequate, the civic administration was not rising to the occasion. He regretted that capable and sincere officials were being transferred.

The government order on displaying names of commercial establishments prominently in Tamil was not being honoured.

Conversion of farm lands into housing plots was not being checked.
