Heavy rain lashed various parts of Kanyakumari district

Nagercoil: Heavy rain lashed various parts of the district for the second day on Monday, bringing cheers to the farming community. The sky remained overcast throughout the district and Abisha (14), daughter of Sasi of Karungal was struck dead by the lightning.

The maximum rainfall of 49.4 was recorded at Perunchani followed by 27.9 mm in Nagercoil, 23 mm in Kottaram, 21 mm in Surulode, 15 mm in Chittar I and 11 mm in Pechipparai.

The water level in Pechipparai dam stood at 36.6 feet, 68.05 feet in Perunchani, 8.30 feet in Chittar I and 8.31 feet in Chittar II.

Meanwhile, agricultural operation was picking up in the district and the agriculture department fixed the target of raising paddy crops on over 10,000 hectares in the Kumbapoov (second crop) season.

According to sources, harvest (Kannipoov) was almost over and farmers already raised nurseries in order to transplant them. All the agriculture extension centres had adequate stock of fertilizer and certified seeds. Farmers could approach these centres and purchase the required fertilizers. The department decided to distribute 750 tones of fertilizers. Flying squads had already been formed to monitor the distribution of fertilizers.
