Thanjavur: A total of 14,755 cataract operations were conducted till December 31 this year in Thanjavur district under the blindness control programme of the District Blindness Control Society, said M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, Collector, here today.

He told presspersons that the target for 2005-2006 was 17,000 cataract operations. Government eye hospitals have to conduct 5000 operations out of which they have done so far 3,708 operations.

The target for voluntary organisations is 12,000 out of which they have done so far 11,000 operations.

Under the scheme for conducting eye test for school students, the target for the district was one lakh students.

Till December 31, exceeding the target, 1,79,375 students had been examined.

The doctors have identified 1294 students as having refractive error. Free spectacles have been given to 1,294 students.

The Government has fixed a target of 400 cornea collections from donors.

The target has been exceeded and 520 corneas have been collected. Corneal transplantation had been done for 325 persons, the Collector added.
