City police on Saturday arrested 13 persons including a woman who are suspected to be part of a banned outfit. Three of the suspects have been arrested before in 2002 and booked under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) for their involvement in training of firearms with naxalites in the forests of Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district. Police sources said the group including prime suspects Palani alias Manickam (48), Duraisingavel (51), both from Kundrathur and Baskar (40) from Minjur along with a woman member Ragini (40) and nine other men gathered in the building of a private school in Neelakandan Salai in Kundrathur on Saturday.

Following specific information to the Q Branch CID, a police team reached the spot and rounded up the group and arrested them. According to a senior officer, the 12 men and the woman are part of the Makkal Jananayaga Kudiyarasu Katchi which they had formed. “The suspects claim they had gathered to pass a resolution to expel a member identified as Shanti from the party,” he added.

All the suspects were booked under Section 17 (1) of Criminal Law Amendment Act by the Kundrathur police. They were remanded in custody and lodged in prison.

In 2002, Palani, Duraisingavel and Baskar were arrested under POTA after they were rounded up by a police party in the jungles of Uthangarai. The trio are now out on bail and were under the surveillance of the Q Branch.
