To elect candidates to 3,856 posts in Vellore district
A total of 12,63,859 voters comprising 6,31,160 men and 6,32,699 women would be going to the polls to elect their representatives for 3,856 posts in the first phase of the local body elections in Vellore district on Monday.
A total of 11,059 candidates are contesting for the elections to be held in the first phase for the post of Mayor and 60 ward members in the Vellore Corporation, chairpersons of the five municipalities of Arcot, Arakkonam, Ranipet, Walajapet and Melvisharam, councillors in 141 wards in the above municipalities, presidents of 11 town panchayats, namely, Sholinghur, Kaveripakkam, Thimiri, Kalavai, Nemili, Thakkolam, Panapakkam, Vilapakkam, Ammoor, Tiruvalam and Pennathur, councillors for 168 wards in the above town panchayats, members for 18 District Panchayat wards and 172 panchayat union wards, presidents for 371 village panchayats, and members for 2,910 village panchayat wards.
A total of 10 candidates are contesting for the post of Mayor of Vellore Corporation, which is facing its first election after the Vellore Municipality was upgraded into a Corporation in 2008. Two erstwhile municipalities (Sathuvachari and Tharapadavedu), six erstwhile town panchayats (Allapuram, Thorappadi, Shenbakkam, Katpadi, Gandhinagar and Kazhinjur) and nine erstwhile village panchayats (Kangeyanallur, Virudhambut, Alamelu Mangapuram, Konavattam, Viruppakshipuram, Palavansathu, Idayansathu, Chitteri and Ariyoor) have been annexed to the Corporation.
In the urban local bodies barring the Vellore Corporation, 43 candidates are contesting for the posts of chairpersons of the five municipalities and 777 candidates for the post of 141 ward councillors, while 65 candidates are contesting for the posts of presidents of 11 town panchayats and 617 for the posts of 168 ward councillors in the town panchayats for which elections are to be held in the first phase.
In the rural local bodies, 92 candidates are contesting for the posts of 18 District Panchayat wards, 740 for the posts of 172 Panchayat Union ward members, 1,317 for the posts of 371 village panchayat presidents and 7,347 for the posts of 2,910 village panchayat ward members in the first phase.
A total of 467 candidates were elected unopposed as village panchayat ward members, 12 as village panchayat presidents and one as Panchayat Union ward councillor. In the urban local bodies, four candidates were elected unopposed as town panchayat ward members.
