TIRUPATTUR: Twelve tonnes of ration rice being smuggled to Karnataka were seized near Natrampalli on Thursday night.

Police said that based on the instruction from the Tirupattur Sub-Division Sub Collector Nandakumar vehicles moving through Kottoor, Pachur and Gandhi Nagar were checked on Thursday night. Police said that during the check a lorry was intercepted at Kottoor but the driver did not stop the vehicle. The officials chased the lorry and stopped it. On verification, it was found that the lorry was carrying 12 tonnes of ration rice. An enquiry revealed that the rice was being smuggled from Puducherry to Bangarapattu in Karnataka.

The smuggled rice was seized and taken to the Civil Supplies Godown at Tirupattur. The lorry and the driver were handed over to the Vellore Food Cell Police.
