A surprisingly large tumour, weighing 12 kg was removed from the uterus of a woman at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in the city on Tuesday.
A woman named Kuppayi Thangaraj (50) from Kulithalai had complained of stomach pain and was admitted to MGMGH on November 10.
She had been experiencing pain over the two years and had no respite in spite of visiting several hospitals earlier.
A series of examinations revealed the presence of a 12 kilogram fibroid tumour mass in her uterus. A team of doctors and anaesthetists operated on Tuesday and removed the tumour.
“It was the largest tumour removed so far in Tiruchi, with the earlier tumour only weighing a maximum of 7 kg,” said Dr. M.A. Aleem, vice principal, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College.
According to R.Vallinayagam, Dean, MGMGH, the surgery was performed free of cost under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, because of the family’s poor financial status.
