Rs.19.96 crore allotted for the project

Construction on 483 houses already under way

TIRUCHI: About 1,147 hutments in various slums in the city limits would be built anew with reinforced cement concrete roof under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP), funded by the Central and State governments.

Under the project, 1,208 houses would be developed in 36 slums identified by the Corporation in the city under the scheme.

The Corporation has been allotted Rs.19.96 crore for the project, Commissioner T. T. Balsamy said speaking at a meeting to review the progress of the scheme works here on Tuesday.

The components for assistance under the scheme include upgrade of existing houses or construction of new ones and provision of basic amenities such as water supply and sewerage.

While 1,147 houses would be renovated, 61 others with tiled roof would be upgraded. Construction on 483 houses was already underway and work on others would begin soon. While Rs.15.15 crore would be spent for the construction of the houses, the remaining sum would be used for the improvement of basic amenities in the slums.

Expedite work

The Commissioner instructed the Corporation engineers to expedite the construction work and the execution of works on strengthening basic amenities in the identified areas.

The meeting was attended by City Engineer S. Raja Mohammed, Executive Engineers R. Chandran and S. Arunachalam and other senior officials.
