10-day book festival kicks off

A 10-day book festival kicked off at Samiappa Cooperative Institute grounds on the Medical College Road on Friday. M.Rangasamy, MLA, and Savithiri Gopal, chairperson, Thanjavur municipality, inaugurated the festival.

According to Sezhiyan, project director of the festival, organised by the Rotary Club of Thanjavur Kings, 75 book stalls have been put up. “Over a lakh of books are on display,” he said. Periyar Self Respect Propaganda Institution, New Century Book House, Uyirmai Pathippagam, Appar Book Stall, Vikatan Pirasuram, Sri Ramakrishna Math and Newhorison publications, are some of the publishing houses.

. Besides books, CDs and VCDs are on display. Digital media, software tutorials CDs in Tamil and Dove multimedia have displayed their educational CDs.

Institutions such as Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) have also put up stalls.

C.T.Ramanathan, president of Rotary Club of Kings, said that Rs.50-lakh sales target is expected this year. Ten per cent discount is given on books.

The exhibition is open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
