Tuticorin: Minister for Animal Husbandry P. Geetha Jeevan inaugurated the fifth phase of free distribution of land to landless agricultural labourers in the district at Ettayapuram on Friday.
She said that a total of 1,652.09 hectares of land would be distributed to 1,082 beneficiaries during this phase. Of the total area identified for distribution, 151.10 ha was ‘poromboke’ land, 1,494.1 ha private land and the remaining encroached plots, which were regularised.
Of the 1,082 beneficiaries identified, 208 were from Vilathikulam taluk, 200 from Ettayapuram taluk, 214 from Ottapidaram taluk, 188 from Kovilpatti taluk, 77 from Sattankulam taluk, 35 from Tuticorin taluk, 36 from Srivaikundam taluk and the rest from Tiruchendur taluk.
Official sources added that during the first four phases, a total of 4,738.67 ha were given away to 2,995 landless families of agricultural labourers.
Of the total extent distributed, 910 ha was poromboke wasteland, 398 ha was encroachment regularised and the rest private land.
Collector R. Palaniyandi, District Revenue Officer P. Anbarasu, Project Officer of Mahilar Thittam M. Madasamy, Joint Director of Agriculture M. Mohanados were present.
