The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Monday sentenced a man to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a mentally challenged girl.

The 28-year-old accused, Kaliappan of Melakottaivaasal, had sexually assaulted the girl in May 2009. The survivor, a 29-year old mentally challenged woman, was sleeping on the lawn of her house in the same area when the crime took place. The girl’s parents had rushed out on hearing her cries, when Kaliappan was found fleeing the spot. Based on their complaint, the man was arrested. On Monday evening, CJM Srinivasan sentenced Kaliappan to 10 years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.2,500.
