Ten tonnes of salt without proper iodisation was seized and destroyed in Tuticorin on Wednesday.

According to P. Sanmugasundaram, Food Inspector, Tuticorin panchayat union, surprise raids were conducted at eleven salt pan units in Tuticorin, where the products were found without proper license for production and address of the manufacturer was also missing on the salt packs. The authorities from the departments of Salt, Supply Office and Labour carried out the inspection and tested the products, which revealed 30 dubious brands labelled in the packets.

The goods seized were destroyed, according to Prohibition of Food Adulteration Act 1954. Besides, 14 non-statutory samples had been confiscated and sent for testing in Tirunelveli, Mr. Sanmugasundaram said. Jha, Deputy Superintendent, Salt Department, and team conducted the raid.
