Tuticorin district receives a total rainfall of 778 mm

Tuticorin: One person was killed and 31 houses were damaged as heavy rain lashed various parts of the district on Tuesday night and in the early hours of Wednesday.

Official sources said Subbaih Konar (55), a resident of Aayiravanpatti village under Ottapidaram taluk, was struck dead by lightning while crossing a field near his house on Tuesday night.

The Collector, R. Palaniyandi, said of the total 31 houses that suffered damage, either partially or fully, 11 were situated at Ottapidaram taluk, two at Srivaikundam taluk, eight at Tiruchendur taluk, four at Sattankulam taluk, one at Vilathikulam taluk and six at Kovilpatti taluk.

He said that 98 revenue villages were affected in the northeast monsoon between October 1 and November 21.

"So far, we had distributed 2,505 kg of rice, 2,015 food packets, and solatium to the tune of Rs.6,05,000 till November 21, to the affected families," he said.

On the destruction to the roads, he said highways and panchayat roads to a stretch of five km each were damaged.

The district received a total rainfall of 778 mm, with an average of 40.95 mm, during the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
