His victims were mainly clients of SBI

BERHAMPUR: Arrest of a youth for involving in the cyber crime in Berhampur will surely make people cautious while withdrawing money at ATM counters.

The arrested 20-year-old youth, Amip Kumar Bhuyan, was hacking the accounts of debit card holders of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the city. He was using the money from the hacked accounts to book railway tickets through internet. He was selling these railway tickets for money.

The Berhampur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Dhananjay Jena, said till now they had not been able to assess the amount of fraud made by Bhuyan. Yet police has received three formal complaints against him. Bhuyan’s handiwork came to the fore when a customer of the SBI main branch in the city complained at the branch that money had been withdrawn from his account without his knowledge. The bank officials found that the money withdrawn from the customer’s account was used to book railway ticket. After getting the complaint from the bank, police managed to track down the person who was travelling on the sleeper class ticket procured by hacking the bank account. Getting information from him police managed to reach Bhuyan.

Mr. Jena said Bhuyan, who was studying in first year B.Com of Berhampur University through distance education had much knowledge about internet banking and transaction as he used to work at a cyber café earlier. “The simplicity of the modus operandi of this youth will surely be an eye opened for the public, so they could be cautious while using their ATM cards to withdraw money,” Mr. Jena said.

According to him all ATM users have to be careful to see that no one is inside the chamber while they operate the ATM machine with their card.

Bhuyan used to enter the ATM counter while it was crowded. He was able to assess the password by staring at his finger movement . His next move was to collect the transaction slip, which is usually thrown away at the spot by a customer. From this slip he used to get the account number. The arrested youth confessed that he resorted to the crime to buy gifts for his girlfriend.
