A youth, who had climbed to the roof of a building, fell to his death in the State’s Purulia district, police sources said on Sunday even as allegations were raised that his death was a result of improper rescue operations carried out by firemen.
“We have received complaints that he was doused by water from a hose pipe in an effort to bring him down. Unfortunately he fell down and died. I have ordered the Director General (Fire) to conduct an enquiry into the matter and submit a report to me,” the State’s Fire and Emergency Services Minister Javed Khan said.
The family of the youth has alleged that he slipped and fell because he was doused with water, but the local fire authorities claim that using the water was only an attempt to “distract” him as he was pelting stones on those trying to rescue him. The incident occurred on Saturday evening. The youth had climbed up to the terrace of the building. There was no ladder. Several attempts to coax him to climb down failed and he started pelting stone on those around, police sources said.
