BHUBANESWAR: Akademi awardee Kathak exponent Rani Karnaa commenced her 16 {+t} {+h} session of Kathak workshop in the city on Tuesday.

The workshop is being conducted at A-39, HIG, Baramunda and students of different age groups have joined the 10-day session, said Karnaa, who was born in Pakistan and is married to an Oriya. “I owe a lot to Orissa and I must give back something to the State. Besides being a daughter-in-law of the soil, I was a disciple of Odissi maestro Kelucharan Mohapatra. Thus I share a special bond with Orissa,” said the dancer-choreographer- guru.

Karnaa has set up Samskritiki Shreyskar, an academy for Kathak in Kolkata that undertakes several initiatives for promotion of Kathak in the land of Odissi. She has opened a branch of the academy in the capital.

“I have received rave response to my series of workshops being hosted here. Besides a number of Odissi dancers from the City, a Japanese dancer also joined my workshop. There are a large number of North Indian families staying in the city who wish their children to learn Kathak that originated in North India,' she observed.
