A two-day national seminar on ‘Women in Local Governance' was inaugurated on Berhampur University campus on Friday. This seminar is sponsored by the UGC and is being organised by the Women's Study Centre of Berhampur University in collaboration with different social organisations like Sunsristi, CWS and UAA. It was inaugurated by Prof. Jayanta Kumar Mohapatra, the Vice-Chancellor of the university. Jyoti Panigrahi, Chairperson of the State Women Commission, was the Chief Guest of inaugural session. She called upon all educated men and women to join public life in large numbers to make Indian democracy vibrant.

She praised late Biju Patnaik for taking decision to reserve 30 per cent seats in panchayat bodies for women. She called upon the political parties to have an egalitarian approach in giving nomination to women to contest elections from Panchayat to Parliament.
