A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide on Thursday by jumping from the fire emergency exit of a private city hospital on hearing of her father’s death who was admitted there for treatment of cancer.

Unable to cope with the news of her father’s demise, she took her life, a hospital spokesperson said.

The woman’s father, Arup Chakraborty (51), was admitted to AMRI Hospitals, Salt Lake, on Wednesday afternoon in a very serious condition. He was suffering from lung cancer that was detected last November. He was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when he died at 4.35 a.m.

The hospital staff broke the news of his death to the family. On hearing the news, his wife collapsed and had to be administered first aid. Unnoticed, his daughter jumped from the fire emergency exit near the ICU, the spokesperson said.
