CUTTACK: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is installing an Automatic Weather System (AWS) inside the campus of Ravenshaw University here.

“Work for the installation has already started and the station would be functional soon” said the Dean of the University Bijoy Kumar Mishra on Saturday.

Automated version

AWS is an automated version of the traditional weather station which would record the daily temperature of the city, rainfall, and wind pattern and cloud position, Mishra said adding that the data recorded in the station would be analysed by a team of faculty and students drawn from Geology, Geography, Physics and Information Technology (IT) departments of the University on daily basis.

Besides, the data recorded at the Station would also be transmitted to IMD's Pune centre for advance analysis and whether forecast.

“The Station, first of its kind installed in any educational institutions of the State would be beneficial not only to the students and teachers of the University for their Practical Studies but to the entire people of the city in knowing the weather condition of the locality in advance”, Mishra added.

The Station after completion would have a weather-proof enclosure containing data logger, rechargeable battery, telemetry (optional) and the meteorological sensors with an attached solar panel and wind turbine mounted upon a mast, Mishra said.
