BERHAMPUR: Drinking water scarcity would snatch away the early morning nap of people of Berhampur during this harsh summer.
As per the decision of the administration, the city is facing power cut from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. This power cut coincides with the drinking water supply time every morning. This power cut is not be due to shortage of power supply but due to shortage in drinking water supply.
The power cut has been proposed to monitor the distribution of scarce drinking supply that the city gets during the summer months. According to the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) engineers of the city, who manage the city drinking water supply, power cut during drinking water supply time is a need during the summer months as it would lead to proper distribution of drinking water to all areas and households.
It is alleged that large-scale use of electric pumps by families and establishments to draw out water from the drinking water supply pipe lines leads to improper distribution of drinking water in the city. The power cuts would coincide with the drinking water supply time. This power cut in the summer mornings would make most of these pumps defunct when drinking water would be supplied. It would enable scarce drinking water supply to reach every nook and corner of the city. At present there are many high areas in the city which are not getting drinking water supply as the pressure of the water flow in the supply water pipe lines is too low due to the large-scale draw of water from supply lines.
