Maoists murdered a gramrakshi or village guard at Dasmantpur village under Baipariguda block of Koraput district on Friday night.
According to the police, the deceased was Goura Chandra Dalai, the gramrakshi of the same village. His bullet wound body was located on the outskirts of the village. He had been fired two bullets at him from extreme close range.
This cold blooded murder had been committed in a way to create terror in the village. At around 10 pm a group of around 15 armed Maoists had reached the vilaleg temple where sankirtan was on for the ongoing Kartik month observation. The deceased village guard was also at the sankirtan spot.
The armed ultras had dragged away Dalai from the spot and later shot him dead on the outskirts of the village. According to police sources he was shot at point blank range leaving no chance for survival.
The killers also left behind hand written posters at the spot. Through these posters the Maoists claimed that the village guard had been murdered as he was a police informer. Following this incident search operation by security forces including Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was intensified in the area to nab the culprits.
It was fourth murder of village guards in undivided Koraput district since September. It was also second murder of village guard in Baipariguda area of Koraput district.
Bhagaban Nayak, a gramrakshi of Giriput village under Baipariguda police station limits of had been allegedly abducted by Maoists. His bullet ridden body was recovered near Majhiguda on October 18. In September nine persons including a former sarpanch, a present naib sarpanch and two village guards had been kidnapped by Maoists from the cut off area of Chitrakonda reservoir in Malkangiri district. The two gramrakshis were murdered and their bodies were found near Pansaput on September 25.
Gramrakshis or village guards are always unarmed and live in remote villages. So, usually they become soft targets of Maoists, who want to terrorise locals through their murders, a senior police official said.
