Molestation and criminal intimidation case against him
The Delhi Police have registered a case of molestation and criminal intimidation against Uttarakhand Minister Harak Singh Rawat. Given the nature of the charges, Mr. Rawat could face arrest in the matter.
The development comes a day after a 30-year-old woman accused Mr. Rawat, who is a Cabinet Minister without portfolio in the Harish Rawat-led Uttarakhand Government, of misbehaving with her when she had gone to meet him in September last year.
In a written complaint submitted at the Safdarjung police station, the woman has purportedly alleged that after misbehaving with her Mr. Rawat had also threatened her.
The victim is a lawyer and is based in Delhi.
The incident had purportedly taken place at a house in Green Park.
The police said the meeting between the two had been scheduled in advance.
The Congress leader has been booked under Sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).
Till Tuesday evening, the police had not formally contacted the accused but said that he faced arrest.
The Criminal Law Amendment Bill makes violation of 354 IPC a non-bailable offence.
Police sources said the victim was asked about the delay in lodging the complaint which was made four months after the incident.
“She told us that given the profile of the person involved in the case and its nature, she was a bit apprehensive and feared being ostracized,” said a source.
