Two Maoists, including an area committee member, were arrested in the remote Alampaka village of Chitrakonda reservoir in Malkangiri district during a joint operation by the personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Chitrakonda police station.

The arrested area committee member was Khila Ranju alias Chanti (25). He was nabbed at the house of Maoist militia of Alampaka village Mangaraj Hantal. Hantal was also arrested. Chanti was area committee member of the cut-off area dalam of Malkangiri division of Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of outlawed CPI (Maoist) organisation.


According to Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh, interrogation of the arrested Maoists revealed the continuing extortion by the naxalites and the tussle among Maoist leaders for the money.

Extortion charge

In the recent past, Chanti along with Madhav, the former leader of the cut-off dalam had extorted some Rs. 7 lakhs from the area of their operation.

Chanti used to demand for his share from the extorted amount from Madhav. But as per his allegation, Madhav had not provided him his share and shifted to other dalam, which had led to a rift between them.

Chanti hailed from Kadaguma village under the Chitrakonda police station. He joined the Maoist outfit some 10 years ago when he was a minor.

He was initially part of the Korukunda dalam of Maoists which is active in adjoining Andhra Pradesh.

After serving the Korkunda dalam for four years, he had been shifted to Guma dalam and later became part of the cut-off area dalam.

Chanti was involved in several murders, said the police.

He was involved in the murder of two gramrakhis, Manik Khila and Jagabandhu Khila in the cut-off area of the Chitrakonda reservoir in September 2012.

He was also among the Maoists who had shot dead a construction contractor and BJP activist Purna Chandra Dalai on the banks of the Chitrakonda reservoir on September 2, 2012. T

he arrested militia, Mangaraj, had extended help to Maoists in several cases of Maoist violence and was providing shelter to the latter, the police sources said.
