Two persons of separate gangs were injured in firing between them at Bidanasi under Bidanasi police station on Thursday. The injured -- Tapas Choudhury (22) and Alok Ranjan Sahu (25) -- are now undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital, while the police took at least six persons, including the injured, into custody in connection with the case.

“The rival groups were engaged in an exchange of firing around 10.30 a.m. near the busy Bidanasi Krushak Bazaar in which two persons sustained bullet injuries,” said local police inspector Rabi Narayan Barik.

The police said the groups had previous rivalry over extortion. While the police are unable to ascertain how many rounds were fired, eye witnesses said there were at least four rounds of firing.

Mr. Barik disclosed that two separate police complaints were filed by the rival factions. While in one case four persons were detained, two others were taken into custody in connection with the second case.

“All the detainees, including those hospitalised, have criminal cases pending against them in the local thana as well as in other thanas of the city,” Mr. Barik said.

According to sources, at least over a hundred NBWs are pending execution in the Bidanasi thana alone and police are trying to execute them before Dasara.
