Two youths, who were involved in extortion in the name of Maoists, were arrested from Narayanpatna police station area in the Koraput district.
Arrest of these fake Maoists could be possible as the several persons from whom they had tried to extort in the name of Naxalites came out to complain before police. The complainants against these arrested fake Maoists were from Narayanpatna, Laxmipur and Damanjodi areas .
The arrested duo was from Upper Locha village under Narayanpatna police station limits. They were 20-year-old Swadhina Mahananda and 19-year-old Gula Tadingi. According to police sources, lure of easy money was the reason behind involvement of these youths in these extortion attempts in the name of Maoists. They had thought that due to fear of Maoists their victims would not complain to .
According to Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Awinash Kumar, when complaints regarding extortion attempts through phone calls in the name of Maoists were received, a trap was set to nab the culprits. Though the person targeted by the fake Maoists, the extortionists were called up to receive the money they had demanded. When the two youthsreached the spot to receive the extortion money from a victim, they were rounded up. An amount of Rs 20,000 that they had tried to extort as well as two mobile phones used for extortion attempts were seized. Interrogation proved that they had no links with the Naxalites.
The Koraput SP thanked the complainants . Koraput district police requested people who face similar extortion threats in the name of Maoists to complain to the police. “The identity of complainants would be kept secret but they will surely help in curbing menace of Maoists,” the SP said.
