An entrepreneurship development training on production of wafer from cassava and starch from canna and arrowroot was organised by Pragati in association with CTCRI, Bhubaneswar, CIP, IFAD and Food Start at Mahadeiput in Koraput block on Saturday . According to Prabhakar Adhikari , secretary of Pragati , the organisation had already introduced tuber crops like yam , orange flesh sweet potato , colocasia , elephant foot yam , yam bin and cassava cultivation across the district with an objective to enhance food and nutrition security of the small and marginal farmers of Koraput .
Among others Chudamani Seth , PD, DRDA , Gadadhar Parida , former district Collector of Koraput , M.Nedunchezhiyan , principal scientist from the regional centre of CTCRI , Bhubaneswar, and V.Surjit , agricultural economist from International Potato Centre , New Delhi, addressed the farmers .
Around 300 farmers from different parts of the district took part in the training programme and got introduced to the value addition technology for production of wafer and starch extraction from canna and arrowroot with the support of A.P.M.Dhanpal and Balasundaram, two experts from Tamilnadu .
Villagers, once get adapted to the new technology, could gather support for installing such extraction units in the village and the district administration would extend all possible support , Mr. Seth said .
