A single shot had pierced his left chest near the heart. Precision of the shot hinted that it may be handiwork of some professional sharp shooter.
The deceased was carried to the MKCG medical college hospital in the city immediately after the shoot out. But he had died by the time he arrived at the hospital.
The unidentified assailant escaped from the spot after firing the single shot. It had not been ascertained whether there were any other persons with the sharp shooter.
On receiving information about the incident senior police officials including Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP), Prateek Mohanty and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Basant Kumar Panigrahy rushed to the spot.
According to the eyewitnesses it was a planned murder.
Investigating police officials also feel that.
The killer had reached the house of Rameya at around 12.10 am.
From outside he had called the deceased.
He had claimed that he had come from a friend of Rameya who had been hospitalised and needed help.
This woke up Rameya who opened the front door of his house to come out.
He was still away from the assailant.
Two locked iron grills were there between him and the shooter. Before the deceased could assess anything, the sharp shooter aimed at his left chest and fired a single lethal shot.
After shooting he immediately escaped from the spot before any neighbours of the deceased could wake up.
According to the SDPO, initial investigation had revealed that the deceased had got involved in real estate business since past one year. He did not have any major past rivalry which could lead to his murder.
So, it was suspected that some recently developed enmity may be the reason behind his killing.
