12-year-old boy among the victims

BHUBANESWAR: In a gruesome act, three persons, including a 12-year-old boy, were brutally hacked to death in Mayurbhanj district of Orissa on Thursday night. Property dispute was said to be the main reason behind the murder. Police had arrested the accused, who had committed the heinous crime.

According to district police, Pasupati Behera, who was originally from neighbouring state of Jharkhand, had been staying with his in-laws in Luhakani village under Mayurbhanj district for last two years. Pasupati had an altercation with his two brother-in-laws, Niranjan and Anjan, on Thursday night.

However, they were calmed down after Pasupati's wife Puspalata intervened in the matter. After all members of the family went to sleep, Pasupati allegedly hacked both Niranjan and Anjan with an axe.

A family relative, the 12-year-old boy Jhaba Behera, who was a witness to murder, was also not spared.

Though Pasupati claimed that he was not allowed to go to Jharkhand for which he had killed the three persons, police suspected the accused had committed the murder with an intention to take control over all properties of his in-laws.

"The accused did not offer any resistance. We have sent all the bodies for postmortem. Investigation is on to ascertain real motive behind the murder," Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police Ravi Kant said.
