CUTTACK: The City police on Wednesday recovered the amount that was robbed from a local trader on Saturday last and arrested three persons in this connection.

The arrested robbers had snatched a bag containing Rs 8 lakh from Rajesh Gupta, a city edible oil trader of Malgodown on Saturday night. Police could manage to recover only Rs 7.5 lakhs from the accused while the remaining amount had been spent by the robbers, the police said.

The police have seized three motorcycles from the accused, one mouser, a revolver, a five bullets and a bhujali from the accused.

“The gang was planning to attack another trader on Tuesday night and on a tip-off we raided their hideout and arrested three of them,” said the local Mangalabag police inspector P K Rath.

Following interrogation, the police could establish that the same gang was involved with the looting of Gupta on Saturday. Police recovered the looted amount from the house of the accused and also came to know that the same gang had also looted another trader last month under Madhupatna police station.

All the three arrested persons belong to Cuttack city while one of them is a Maharashtrian, who had been staying in the city for long with his family.

Police said five more members of the same gang are still absconding and efforts are made to arrest them soon.

“The gang members are all in their late 20s and early 30s and they have plenty of criminal records in their names. They target the businessmen from Malgodown, who return to their homes late in the evening with cash after the day’s business,” said DCP A.N. Sinha.

Traders cautioned

Robbing of Rajesh Gupta on Saturday was the sixth such incident during last five months where the traders from Malgodown are the targets and the criminals have decamped with nearly Rs 30 lakh from these traders. Police however, have been urging the businessmen not to travel alone late in the evening carrying so much cash.
