Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to provide security to all witnesses in the Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler cases of 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, which was released to the media here, he also demanded immediate constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the pattern of Gujarat riot cases to re-probe the Tytler cases besides day-to-day trial in all the anti-Sikh riots cases.

He expressed satisfaction over framing of charges by a Delhi court on Friday against Sajjan Kumar and claimed that witnesses who stood their ground and dared to depose against powerful and mighty for 25 long years were “expressing fear that they may be physically harmed or even eliminated to scuttle conviction of Sajjan Kumar”.

He said security of witnesses was more important, adding that if witnesses in the Best Bakery case and the 26/11 case could be provided security , “why the government is mum on providing security to witnesses in anti-Sikh riots cases?” - PTI
