The prime accused in the murder of a sub-inspector of the City Police at Garden Reach on February 12 confessed during interrogations on Friday by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that the “sub-inspector was his real target”.

The confession of the accused, Sheik Suhan is significant as it refutes the claim of the State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim that the target of the assailants was the Trinamool Congress councillor Mohd Ikbal and that Sub-Inspector Tapas Chowdhury was shot while trying to protect him.

“Even though the accused has confessed he can change his statement any time,” Inspector General of CID, Vineet Goyal however said.

Mohd Ikbal has been charged also for being involved in the violence and is absconding. His proximity to Mr Hakim is only too well known and he was seen by the side of the Minister when the latter was speaking to the media shortly after the killing of the policeman.

This had led a somewhat embarrassed government to instruct Mr Hakim not to speak to the media even as there were questions of his wings being clipped by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Mr Hakim, who had since been keeping a low profile, was sitting by the side of Ms Banerjee at a Press conference addressed by the latter at the headquarters of the State Health Department on Friday.
