Enforcement squads to carry out surprise checks on PDS outlets

Officials warned on transfer of commodities

Stress on grievance redressal mechanism

BHUBANESWAR: The State government on Thursday announced to prepare a new crop procurement policy with an aim to do away with obstacles in providing farmers minimum support price in the State.

Speaking at conference of field-level officials of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department under Central Revenue Division, Departmental Minister Sarada Nayak said crop procurement policies of other States were being studied and based on the best practices Orissa’s own crop procurement policy would be prepared.

Similarly, enforcement squads were being sent to carry out surprise checks if essential commodities meant for needy people in public distribution system were reaching the target, he said.

The Minister warned the officials that process involved in transfer of commodities from wholesalers to retailers should be kept under strict surveillance. He said allegations were piling up that everything was right on pen and paper while ground reality was something else.

Although there was a provision to display information about commodities on transporting vehicles, it was not properly followed. Now the department has decided to ensure that information was put up on the vehicles.

Secretary of food supplies and consumer welfare Manoj Ahuja said the report regarding lifting of commodities and its sale to people should reach department and any laxity on parts of officials would not be tolerated.

Moreover, he stressed on, grievance redressal mechanism. “At present Sanjog Helpline has been established by Panchayati Raj Department and people are registering their grievances through the helpline. Concerned official should be informed about complaints through SMS. The official must act and comply on it,” Mr. Ahuja said.

Civil Supply Officers, Assistant Civil Supply Officers and Supply Inspectors of 10 Central districts took part in the convention.

Similar, conference of officers under Northern Revenue Division was held in Sambalpur recently.
