Puducherry Municipality holds meeting with them
“We've requested contractors to start between 6.30 a.m. and 7 a.m”
“Workers should wear uniform, safety gear”
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Municipality has told contractors involved in garbage clearance to start work early to keep the areas clean. It has also insisted that workers wear proper uniforms and safety gear, including gloves.
The municipality conducted a meeting with all contractors involved in clearing garbage in its limits on Wednesday.
Private contractors, self-help groups and non-governmental organisations carrying out the work attended the meeting convened by Chairperson of the municipality B. Sridevi.
Officials said that at present, garbage clearing work began at 8 a.m. every day. “We have requested the contractors to start the work between 6.30 a.m. and 7 a.m. They could complete the work in the ward by 9 a.m.,” a senior official said.
The contractors expressed “practical difficulties” in starting early as households disposed garbage only after 8 a.m. However, they promised to start work early, he said.
For the evening round of work, the municipality suggested that the contractors begin from 2.30 p.m. and complete it by 4 p.m. or 5 p.m.
“The workers should wear uniform and safety gears such as gloves. Precautionary measures should be taken. The contractors should not ask their workers to work without proper safety gear and uniform,” he said.
There are 14 contractors with the municipality who take up 24-hour cleaning work at 10 wards and main roads, an NGO which maintains the Raj Bhavan ward and 12 SHGs, besides municipal workers who are also involved in garbage clearing work, he said.
