Stating that there is a shortage of police personnel in the State, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked major sports clubs on Friday to organise their own private security.

“About 50,000 to one lakh people watch [football] matches. It is not possible to provide security for all. Clubs should raise their security themselves,” she said at a Sports Department event.

Ms. Banerjee’s remarks come in the wake of violence at an I-League match in the city recently. A player received a head injury during the violence involving spectators. The match had to be called off after one of the contesting clubs refused to play any further.

Announcing the “Banga Khel Ratna” awards for sportspersons, the Chief Minister said the State Government will honour sportspersons of two categories, seniors and juniors from next year.

Ms. Banerjee called for an umbrella organisation to look after the maintenance of all sports stadiums in the State. A task force comprising veterans in various disciplines will be constituted to promote sports and encourage the youth frombackward regions like Jangalmahal to participate in sports, she said
