State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has filed a criminal case against executive officer of Notified Area Council, Junargarh in Kalahandi district for failing to dispose of solid waste being generated from the urban centre.
The case was filed in the court of Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Dharmagarh. It has been urged that to take cognizance of the offence and punish the authority of NAC.
In its petition, the SPCB said the NAC authority failed to comply with the authorisation conditions, despite several opportunities given by the board. It violated Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000, SPBC alleged.
Junargarh has become the second urban local body, after Sambalpur Municipality, against which SPCB has moved to initiate criminal proceedings under the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000.
According to the SPCB sources, NAC authorities were dumping its municipal solid waste in two locations near Gas Bhawan, Pundrihuda which is about 100 m away from NH-201 and another dumping area near NAC Town Hall. The NAC was alleged to have failed to comply with the authorisation condition by not disposing the municipal solid waste in the authorised site.
