The 22nd south Odisha drama festival was inaugurated at Kavisurya Rangamanch auditorium in the city on Saturday.
The seven-day drama festival is being organised by Ganjam Zilla Mancha Kalakar Sangh (GZMKS), a major amateur cultural organisation of Ganjam district. According to general secretary of the organising committee, Ramesh Moharana, this drama festival was aimed at providing scope to rural amateur theatre troupes of south Odisha.
As per the organisers, during this festival only those plays which have not been enacted anywhere else in the State, are allowed to be performed. It provides the audience new plays as well as scope to new writers and directors to show their talent. So, most of the plays selected for this drama festival were related to issues of the common mass especially those who live in rural areas.
During the inauguration ceremony ‘Chira Kagaj’ a play written by veteran theatre activist Ramesh Moharana was released in book form. The play enacted on the inaugural evening was ‘Duhita’. It was performed by ‘Sri Sri Sri Narasimha Natyasansad’ of Sorala.
Yudhisthir Bhanja Samant was the playwright of this play while it was directed by Tirupati Sahu. Kanhu Mohapatra provided the background music while Bhikari Moharana was in charge of stage craft. The play was based on the menace of female foeticide. The play was in the format of a social melodrama with hints of recent events related to atrocities on women.
On the second evening of the drama festival, ‘Bapa’ would be enacted by Officers’ Club of R.Udaygiri in Gajapati district. Mayur Natya Samsad of Beguniapada would perform the play ‘Athacha Andhar’ on Monday evening. A play based on village politics, “Gaon Halchal’ would be enacted by Gopabandhu Pathagar of Kirtipur on the fourth evening. Subhasankha Parishad of Gobara would perform ‘Chakravyuha’ on the next evening. On Thursday ‘Neija Mote to Gaon Ku’ would be performed by Jagananth Kala Parishad of Chikitigarh. Last evening of the drama festival on Friday would be devoted to a cultural show and prize distribution ceremony.
