Jammu: The management of the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir plans to start a laser-based sound and light show with musical fountains at Katra to acquaint devotees with the life of Mata Vaishno Devi.

"A world-class light and sound show with musical fountains will be set up to make people aware of the epic story of Mata Vaishno Devi. This will cost Rs 15 crore and is likely to be completed by April next year," said a spokesman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB).

This was decided in view of the feedback from many visitors to the shrine that they were not very familiar with the legend of Mata Vaishno Devi and that they were looking for traditional idols of Devi Durga or Parvati with the result that sometimes they could not even notice `holy pindies', the spokesman said.

Global tenders for the project have already been invited and some parties from Britain, Singapore and Australia have shown interest in it. The Indian Tourism Development Corporation has also shown interest in the project, he said.

The project will help decongest the yatra route and keep pilgrims a little longer in Katra, boosting the town's economy, he said.

The shows will be held throughout the nights and expected fee will be about Rs. 50 a person, the spokesman said.
