Puri Municipality has been asked to prepare a detail project report for rehabilitation of slum dwellers, who are in possession of a big patch of land near Puri Railway Station, under Rajiv Awas Yojna scheme.
The encroachment of land by slum dwellers has been a stumbling block for development of Puri Railway Station. Eviction of slum dwellers from the site is not possible as per the State Slum Rehabilitation and Development Police unless alternative arrangement is made.
A committee comprising of members of Housing and Urban Development department and East Coast Railway would make joint inspection of the proposed site for relocation at Puri and re-examine the options of development.
“For rehabilitation of slum dwellers, encumbrance-free land is required to be identified.
It was indicated that Railways may consider making available required land close to encroached land for rehabilitation purpose provided alternative land in lieu of this is made available by government near Malatipur railway station,” it was informed at a recently held high-level meeting convened to discuss development of Puri Railway Station. The meeting resolved that, “a DPR on rehabilitation of the slum dwellers will be prepared for funding under RAY scheme so that it can be placed before Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC).”
ECoR is taking up development of both Bhubaneswar and Puri railway stations on a priority basis.
Development of Puri Railway Station also assumed significance since about 30 lakh devotees were expected to visit the holy town in 2015 on occasion of Nabakalebar of Lord Jagannath.
