City police on Tuesday arrested six youths who were behind the broad day light murder of Shanti Prasad Mishra (31), a youth with criminal past in Gosaninuagaon police station area on January 29.
Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday evening, Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Prateek Mohanty said the deceased had become prey to the violent rivalry he had created through his terror tactics. According to the police , the deceased had around 20 criminal cases pending against him. It again proved that those who play with fire of criminal activity get burnt by it one day. Shanti had been bombed to death in Gosaninuagaon area of the city on January 29 morning.
All the six accused arrested in his murder case were from different areas of the city. They were Rakesh Panda, Ganesh Panigrahy, Babaji Rana, Sheik Jafar, Mrutyunjay Sabat and Ranjit Panigrahy. Mrutyunjay and Ranjit had not taken part in the attack on Shanti, although they were part of the murder conspiracy.
All the arrested persons also had past criminal record and were in Berhampur circle jail in recent past. Investigation has revealed that the plan to kill Shanti had started to take shape inside the jail in December. When the accused persons came out of jail, they chalked out the details of their plan and committed the murder.
According to the police all the arrested persons had personal as well as common grudge against the deceased. Families of some of these persons had faced physical and mental torture at the hands of the deceased. Babaji said the deceased was using terror tactics to compel his father to sell off their house at Badasahi area of Gosaninuagaon police station area at throw away price. According to him his father had also faced derogatory humiliation at the hands of Shanti, which had led him to be part of this murder conspiracy.
