A sub-inspector of Kolkata Police was suspended here on Monday on charges of letting an accused detained in connection with sexually harassing a woman walk away without registering any complaint against him.

The youth was detained at the Garfa police station on April 14 after a woman lodged a complaint against him for allegedly pushing her around and passing lewd comments when she was returning home late in the evening with her friend. A traffic police constable had come to their rescue when the accused was harassing them. He took the accused and the victim to the police station.

The victim said that no formal complaint was registered even as she was assured of action from the officers at the police station.

However, the next day when the accused was spotted in the same area she approached the police station and insisted on registering her complaint. It was only on Sunday, a day after the incident, that a fresh complaint was registered against the accused.

A departmental inquiry has been started against the suspended sub-inspector Ramesh Chandra Das.
