Festivities will begin from today

45 platoons of armed police to be deployed

City to have 570 pandals of different deities

CUTTACK: Claiming that there is no specific intelligence report about any threat perception for Dusshera in Cuttack , the Police Commissionerate has made elaborate security arrangements for the five-day puja and one-day immersion festival. The festivities in the Millennium city will begin on Sunday with Mahasashthi puja and the immersion is scheduled for Friday.

Three-tier system

A three-tier security arrangement has been proposed in the city, which has been divided into eight zones. Each zone will be headed by an ACP rank officer while the traffic in the city during festivities is bestowed on a DCP rank officer. Police Commissioner B.K. Sharma would camp in the city during these days to take stock of the situation.

“Special squads such as anti-liquor, anti-crime and quick reaction teams would give additional teeth to the security arrangements”, said the city DCP A.N. Sinha. He said 45 platoons of armed police with some 1,000 constables and home guards would be deployed in the city. Besides 400 officers in the ranks of SI and ASI, 60 inspectors, 61 havildars, eight commandants, 32 DSPs would be posted in the city.

Tipplers beware!

According to status of the puja pandal and sensitiveness of the area, the mandaps have been divided into three categories and accordingly security has been provided. Additional forces are deployed at mandaps sporting silver tableaus, he said. The city this year would have some 150 pandals of which 71 would worship Ma Durga while the remaining have Mahadev, pitulas, kunja and Sri Krishna.

Plainclothed policemen, police video teams, excise sleuths, anti-liquor, anti-goonda squads along with quick action forces would remain alert to act in case of any emergency, police sources said. Since liquor shops would be closed for last three days till immersion on October 10, at least 10 anti liquor squad each headed by an inspector would patrol the city to pick up drunken revellers.

Armed to the teeth

The quick reaction force will be equipped with Vajra vehicles, air gun, rubber bullets and tear gas shells. Personnel in this team will arrive at the disturbing spot immediately with SLR and AK-47s in the event of any disturbance, sources added.

Beside the city, the district would have about 570 pandals where different deities including the Goddess and Hara-Parvati would be worshipped during these days. Durga puja is also held with similar fervors in areas like Banki, Badamba, Athgarh, Choudwar, Salipur and Mahanga blocks of the district.
