Science and technology `should aid development'

National Science Day celebrated at Pondicherry University

Puducherry: Deputy General Manager of GAIL (India) Limited, U.S. Rao, has called for application of science and technology for the development of society. Addressing students and staff of the Ramanujam School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at Pondicherry University on the occasion of National Science Day celebration here on Wednesday, Mr. Rao said that the celebration should not be a mere ritual. National Science Day was an occasion for paying tributes to those who had contributed significantly to science and technology.

He said the theme "Impact of Information Technology on Society and its Perception in the 21st Century" was an apt one.

Noting that computer science and Information Technology had brought about radical changes over the years, Mr. Rao said that there had been perceptible change in the attitude of parents, who wanted to ensure good education for their wards. He also stressed that there should be collective effort to take the benefits of science, information technology and computer science everywhere. Scientific discoveries and inventions should be used for positive growth of society.

Dean of the School H .P. Patil welcomed the gathering. Mr. Vijay Anand, lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, highlighted the purpose of the interaction between students and Mr. Rao.
